For the first time, there is a major Swedish malt whisky with an age statement. Mackmyra just launched Mackmyra Ten Years, a Swedish 10-year old single malt whisky. Although Mackmyra, the best known whisky-makers in Sweden, did launch a limited release with an age statement some time ago, that was never available for general sale.

Mackmyra do peated whisky a little differently to most distilleries. The traditional method for smoking food in the country was over burning juniper twigs – Mackmyra have taken this tradition and mashed it up with some modernity – adding juniper branches (and I believe sometimes moss) to their kiln. Up until 1999 there were no Whisky distilleries in Sweden. Then one day and enterprising group of friends decided to change that, and the Mackmyra Distillery was born.

The flavor, however, takes a sharp turn into turf that is herbal and spicy. Mackmyras Gravity Distillery is well engineered, looks (and is) high tech and energy efficient. We were very pleasantly impressed that the staff are so personally dedicated to creating great whisky, showing a lot of attention to details and a lot of pride in the distillery. Mackmyra is a Swedish distillery with a cool back story. In 1998, 8 friends went on a skiing trip.

It has some smokier malt too, so we are surely talking about complex Review / Mackmyra Björksav. This whisky is the latest single malt in the Seasonal Range, which appears each Spring and Autumn, from the pioneering Swedish distillery.
